Welcome to SPSP 2012

The Thirteenth Annual Meeting of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology
will be held January 26-28, 2012, in San Diego, California.

SPSP hits the beach this January in sunny San Diego. Take in the science at the stunning harbor-front convention center but save time to explore all that San Diego has to offer.

Whether you are looking for a world-class beach or a world-class museum, San Diego will deliver. Arrive early and enjoy a day at SeaWorld or the San Diego Zoo before an evening of dining and entertainment in the historic Gaslamp Quarter. Sip cocktails and check out the local art scene in the East Village. A short cab ride away, you can sample a selection of hand-crafted beers and hear live indie music in North Park, or check out the thriving gay scene and dance the night away in Hillcrest. Before you leave, grab a fish taco and watch the sunset in Ocean Beach. Escape from the cold for some science in the sun.

The Convention Committee invites you to stay at the recently renovated San Diego Marriott Marquis and Marina, conveniently located right next to the convention center. Wake up to views of the marina and take a stroll along the harbor. Get in a quick workout in the state of the art fitness facility, meet up with a collaborator in the hotel lounge, or unwind at the California chic pool bar. Whether you choose a room overlooking the city or one with a view of the bay, the convention rates offer a lot of bang for your buck at this prime location in the heart of America’s finest city. And if you stay at the Marriott Marquis, you qualify for deep discounts on your meeting registration!

The meeting activities will open on Thursday afternoon with the Presidential Symposium, followed by a Welcome Reception. Friday evening we welcome best-selling consumer psychologist, Brian Wansink, who will be giving a plenary address. Wansink's ground-breaking research on food psychology and eating behavior is behind popularized terms such as "mindless eating," "health halos," and 100-calorie packs. A new feature will be the showcasing of the graduate student poster award winners in a "Wall of Fame." Back by popular demand is also the "data blitz" session, in which selected 12 speakers will have five minutes each to present their must-know research findings. What an exciting and intellectually stimulating meeting this will be!

Looking to start the meeting early? Select from a smorgasbord of independent preconferences to be held on Thursday, January 26th.

The cost of lunches are included in the registration fee, allowing us to picnic on the patio overlooking the bay, where you can soak up San Diego’s biggest attraction, its sunny skies and temperatures nearing 70 degrees F. Additional new features to look forward to this year include a smart phone app and web program to help you navigate the program and create a customizable schedule for the meeting and the option of onsite childcare during the meeting if you are traveling with your kids.

The Meeting Committee is looking forward to our most successful convention yet. We hope to see you there!
